According to local legend, Tamagi has been inhabited for over 250 years. In the period between 1940 and 1980 the population of Tamagi may have exceeded 700. In the years that followed, Tamagi experienced a gradual population decline. Migration to urban areas in Nepal as well as foreign countries combined with upheavals in the country contributed to this decline. The traditional recruitment to Gurkha contingents and the associated benefits for soldiers and their families no doubt also accelerated the population decline.
The general lack of maintenance of local houses can be attributed to lacking maintenance by aging villagers who have relocated and a lack of interest among their descendants. This neglect is a sign of and has further contributed to a general lack of interest in Tamagi’s cultural heritage. This is confirmed by comparisons of present-day Tamagi with photos of the village prior to the exodus described above. During the past three decades the overall face of the village and its fields and terraces have turned into dense forest or jungle. Recent initiatives focusing on the revival of a once-thriving village (including reconnection to the national power grid and fiber network Internet access) offer some hope, however.
